Iron
Stomach and gut healthIron is an essential trace element involved in the production of hemoglobin and the transport of oxygen in the blood.
In circulation, most iron is bound to the protein transferrin.
Why this matters
Blood iron reflects how much iron is immediately available for critical functions like oxygen transport and energy metabolism. Low levels can cause fatigue, weakness, and poor concentration before anemia develops, while high levels may harm organs. Diet, vitamin C intake, blood loss, and absorption inhibitors like tea or coffee influence iron status. Monitoring helps detect imbalances early so nutritional or medical measures can be taken.
How this connects to other biomarkers
- Serum Iron alone fluctuates throughout the day and has limited diagnostic value — always interpret it alongside Ferritin and Transferrin Saturation.
- Low Iron with low Transferrin Saturation and low Ferritin confirms iron-deficiency anemia.
- Low Iron with normal Ferritin and elevated hs-CRP suggests anemia of chronic disease (inflammation locking iron away) rather than true iron deficiency.
