Protein, total
Stomach and gut healthTotal protein measures all proteins in blood plasma, primarily albumin and globulins.
It helps evaluate nutritional status, liver function, and immune system health.
Why this matters
Total protein levels and the albumin/globulin ratio reveal nutritional status, liver synthetic function, kidney health, and immune system activity. Low levels may cause edema, slow wound healing, frequent infections, and fatigue, while elevated levels can indicate dehydration, chronic inflammation, autoimmune conditions, or blood cancers like multiple myeloma. The ratio between albumin and globulins provides additional diagnostic insight into specific conditions affecting protein balance.
How this connects to other biomarkers
- Low total Protein with low Albumin suggests malnutrition, chronic liver disease, or losing protein through the kidneys or gut.
- Elevated total Protein with elevated Globulin and a low Albumin/Globulin (A/G) Ratio suggests excess antibodies — either broad inflammatory/autoimmune disease (polyclonal) or a single abnormal antibody-producing clone (monoclonal gammopathy). Distinguish with Immunofixation / Immunotyping and Immunoglobulin G, Immunoglobulin A, Immunoglobulin M levels.
