Spleen volume
Immune system healthThe total volume of the spleen measured by imaging.
Spleen enlargement (splenomegaly) can indicate infection, inflammation, blood disorders, or portal hypertension.
Why this matters
Enlarged spleen (splenomegaly) causes fullness or pain in the left upper abdomen, often felt when breathing deeply. You might feel full after eating small amounts as the spleen presses on the stomach. Other symptoms include fatigue, frequent infections, and easy bleeding or bruising as the enlarged spleen traps blood cells. Very large spleens risk rupture from minor trauma, causing life-threatening internal bleeding.
Spleen enlargement indicates underlying conditions like blood disorders, liver disease, infections (especially mononucleosis), or certain cancers requiring investigation.
