Do I need to fast before the Prevention Starter blood test?
Yes. We recommend fasting for 8 to 12 hours before the blood draw (water is allowed and encouraged). This gives you accurate results for fasting blood glucose, triglycerides and the TyG index calculated from them, an indicator of early insulin resistance.
While fasting:
- Drink 2 to 3 glasses of water to stay well hydrated (this also makes the blood draw easier)
- Avoid food, coffee, tea, juice and any drinks other than water
- Keep taking prescribed medication unless your doctor advises otherwise. Please take thyroid medication (for example levothyroxine) only after the blood draw.
- Avoid intensive exercise for 24 hours before the test
For a morning appointment, the easiest approach is to eat nothing after dinner the evening before and to drink only water in the morning.
If fasting is not possible for medical reasons (for example with diabetes), please tell us when you book. We will then advise you on the best approach.
