Can I be scanned with metal implants / pacemaker / IUD / braces / during pregnancy?

Metal implants and devices: Hip and knee replacements and other orthopedic implants are almost always fine for an MRI, and so are copper IUDs. Fixed dental braces are usually fine too, but can distort the images around the jaw. Please still list every implant in your health questionnaire.

Active implanted devices are different: pacemakers, defibrillators, neurostimulators and similar devices need an individual check before the scan. Many modern devices are MR-conditional, which means an MRI is safe under conditions set by the manufacturer. Please tell us about your device before your appointment, in your health questionnaire or by email to get@aheadhealth.com, ideally with your implant card, and we will check whether the scan is possible at your location.

Pregnancy: Elective preventive MRI scans are generally postponed until after pregnancy. In the first three months of pregnancy, an MRI is done only if it is medically necessary.

Breastfeeding: This is no problem for the full-body MRI, which uses no contrast agent. The Mamma MRI does use a contrast agent, and breastfeeding changes how breast tissue looks on the images. Please mention it in your pre-consultation, which always takes place before a Mamma MRI.
