Can I be scanned with metal implants / pacemaker / IUD / braces / during pregnancy?
Metal Implants & Devices: Most modern orthopedic implants (like hip or knee replacements) and copper IUDs are MRI-safe.
However, devices like pacemakers, defibrillators, or certain neurostimulators are generally not MRI-safe unless they are specifically labeled as "MR-conditional." We conduct a thorough pre-screening for every implanted device. Dental braces are usually okay but may cause some image distortion around the jaw area only.
Pregnancy: Elective preventive MRI scans are generally postponed until after pregnancy. Specifically, MRI is a relative contra-indication during the first trimester. Breastfeeding is fine and does not interfere with the scan.
