Lung and airwaysDetected by MRI
Mass in the mediastinum
An abnormal growth in the mediastinum, the central part of the chest between the lungs that contains the heart, large vessels and main airways. The chest MRI shows the size and location of the mass and its relationship to neighbouring structures. MRI can raise suspicion of this finding, but a definitive diagnosis requires further specialist assessment, typically examining a tissue sample taken by biopsy or during surgical removal, and sometimes additional imaging or blood tests.
