Wear-related degeneration of the small joints that connect the vertebrae; as the cartilage thins with age, it can lead to irritation and inflammation. MRI shows the narrowed joint space, cartilage loss, and bone changes that can cause back pain, though the findings do not always match a person's symptoms.
