Tear of the shoulder rotator cuff (rotator cuff tear)

A tear in one of the tendons of the rotator cuff, the group of muscles that stabilise and move the shoulder, causing pain and weakness with overhead movements. MRI shows the affected tendon, the size of the tear, and any muscle wasting that helps decide between rehabilitation and surgery.
