Inflammation of the hip bursa (trochanteric bursitis)
Pain over the outer hip, classically attributed to inflammation of the bursa overlying the greater trochanter of the thigh bone; irritation of the gluteal tendons often plays a role as well. MRI shows fluid in the bursa and any related gluteal tendon changes.
