Vitamin D deficiency

A shortage of vitamin D, which the body makes mainly from sunlight on the skin and which helps absorb calcium for strong bones; deficiency is common in northern regions with little sun and can cause bone and muscle problems. A blood test measures the vitamin D level (25-OH vitamin D) and shows whether a deficiency is present.
