Enlargement of the thyroid

An enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter) is most often caused by iodine deficiency, but can also point to autoimmune disease or nodules; it often causes no symptoms early on, though a large goiter can press on the windpipe and esophagus. MRI shows the enlarged gland as an anatomical finding and prompts blood testing to assess thyroid function.
